Falun Gong Practitioners were Detained and Sentenced for Printing, Copying and Distributing Falun Go

1.       Ten Practitioners, who Print Falun Gong Materials, were Arrested and Their Properties Confiscated


Mr. Zhou Yongnian, male, 40, resident of Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province. On February 19, 2000, Zhou and his wife were arrested and detained for a month for performing the Falun Gong exercises outdoors. At that time, Mr. Zhou’s wife was two months pregnant. After they were released, the police often harassed them. They left home for Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong on October 1, 2000.


On December 8, 2000, more than a dozen policemen from the Tongzhou District Police Department surrounded Zhou’s temporary home in Beijing. The police arrested Zhou and several dozen practitioners there, including the parents of a 9-month-old baby. They also ransacked the entire home, confiscated all the valuables including personal computers, copy machines and more than 50,000 Yuan in cash (average annual salary in China is 7,000 Yuan). They refused to leave a copy of the receipt. The police ransacked the home of Mr. Zhou in the city of Yanzhou three times. They confiscated virtually everything, including personal items of necessity. His wife and their 28-day-old baby were forced to live under house arrest. She was not allowed to answer the phone and was constantly followed. She had no choice but to flee from their home with the baby with no money at all. No one has heard from them since.


On April 6, 2001, the Tongzhou District Court in Beijing sentenced Mr. Zhou to 9 years in prison.


Other practitioners who were sentenced along with Mr. Zhou for printing and distributing Falun Gong materials are listed below:


Mr. Wei Qishan, male, 43, home address is #12 Linheli, Unit #3, Apartment #12, Haigang District, Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, sentenced to four and a half years in prison.


Mr. .Ma You, male, 34, home address is the 4th Hongshi Forestry Department Employee Residential Building, Unit #8, Apartment #7, Huadian, Jilin Province, employee of the hotel of Jilin Province Honglin Forestry Bureau, sentenced to five and a half years in prison.


Mr. Wang Delong, male, 47, a retired worker from the Jilin City Train Station, Jilin Province, sentenced to four and a half years in prison.


Mr. Zhu Nannan, male, 27, home address is 847 Yunlu Street, Lingbi County, Anhui Province, sentenced to four and a half years in prison.


Mr. Ma Changfeng, male, 29, resident of Changqing County, Shandong Province, sentenced to five and a half years in prison.


Mr. Zhang Feng, male, 31, home address is 134 Northwest Road, Shayibake District, Urumqi, Xinjiang Province, sentenced to four and a half years in prison.


Ms. Jian Chunxia, female, 27, resident of Beige Village, Litianmu Division, Cang County, Hebei Province, sentenced to three and a half years in prison.


Ms. Wu Chunru, female, 24, resident of Xiaohongshi Village, in Hongshi Township, Jilin Province, sentenced to three and a half years in prison.


Ms. Li Zhuhua, female, 48, home address is No. 5 Renhe Street, Unit 5, Apartment #142, Nangang District, Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province. She is an employee of the Longhua Pharmaceuticals Company, sentenced to three years in prison.


2.       A Couple was Fired, Heavily Fined, and Detained, their Home was Ransacked, Properties Confiscated, and Parents Harassed


Mr. Cao Yuguo, male, 36, former employee of the Rushan Fruit Products Factory. Ms. Jiang Ping, Cao’s wife, Rushan, Weihai County, Shandong Province. They were arrested in a Beijing hotel. Mr. Cao was fired from Rushan Fruit Products Factory and sentenced to three years in prison for copying and distributing Falun Gong articles. After the police of Rushan City Police Department brought Cao Yuguo back to Rushan from Beijing, the police took off his clothes and shoes, handcuffed him outside in the corridor, and urged all the passers-by to humiliate him. They interrogated him everyday and routinely beat and tortured him. At the time of his arrest, Cao had more than 20,000 Yuan in cash with him in the hotel room. The police not only confiscated the cash, but also took a copy machine, a motorcycle, three cell phones and another 9000 Yuan from his home. Cao Yuguo’s parents, who are in their seventies, were forced to stay with their daughter. Cao’s home is now empty.


The police forced Jiang Ping’s father to pay another 5000 Yuan to secure Jiang Ping’s release. When Jiang Ping was finally released, her employer fired her. Consequently, she and her son were forced to live with her parents.


3.       Yu Juan Arrested and Severely Beaten


Ms. Yu Juan, female employee of Fuhao Leather Company in Rushan City, Shandong Province. On October 7, 2000, she was arrested while at work for distributing materials about Falun Gong. She was beaten severely by Secretary Jiang Wen, Captain Yu Zhiwen, and another man named Sha.


4.       A Couple Sentenced to Labor Camp, Their Elderly Parents and Children Left Unattended and Harassed


Mr. Yu Qinli is a resident of Zhaiqian Village, Kouzhen Town in Rushan City, Shandong Province. His wife, Ms. Yu Shufeng, was sentenced to three years of “re-education through labor” in November of 2000 for distributing materials about Falun Gong. Yu Qingli himself was then under penal custody. Their aged parents and their children are left unattended at home. Jiang Cuimin, director of the Women’s Society, often takes local policemen to Yu’s home to threaten and menace their children and elderly parents.


5.       Jiang Zhong Arrested for Sending Falun Gong Emails to Oversea


Mr. Jiang Zhong, male, 27, resident of Qingdao City, Shandong Province, was a former manager of the Weifang division of the Qingdao Beer Company. He was arrested in July 1999 and sent to Hanting Detention Center of Weifang for sending emails about Falun Gong to Hong Kong. At the detention center he was not allowed to study Falun Gong or practice the exercises. He had been put in heavy shackles and would not be given food for a few days. He had been forced to eat radishes boiled in salt water and mud. Jiang Zhong had been detained there for nearly 8 months and lost 30 Kilograms (66 pounds). His mother (also a Falun Gong practitioner) from Qingdao came to Weifang to visit him several times, but was never allowed to see him. In April 2000, Jiang Zhong was sent to Weibei Farm to serve his 3year term.


6.       Three Practitioners Sentenced to Jail Terms of up to 6 Years for Printing Falun Gong Materials


Li Jinpeng, He Yuansheng, Shi Xiufen, resident of Beijing; On Jan 9, 2001 Beijing courts sentenced the three practitioners to jail terms of up to 6 years for printing and distributing Falun Gong materials. Li Jinpeng was detained while distributing Falun Gong materials. He was sentenced to 6 years. He Yuansheng was detained by the Security Department in Beijing Northern Transportation University while distributing Falun Gong materials. He was sentenced to 4 years. Shi Xiufen and another practitioner named Ni Yanxia were detained while distributing Falun Gong materials in Pingguoyuan residence area in Shijingshan District. Shi Xiufen was sentenced to 3 years in prison.


7.       A Couple Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison without being Allowed to Finish Their final Statement in Court in Beijing


Mr. Guo Wei, male, from Beijing; Ms. Zhou Jing, female, wife of Guo Wei. On October 21, 2000, the Beijing Xicheng Court sentenced Falun Gong practitioner, Guo Wei, to a 5-year prison term for printing large amounts of Falun Gong material and visiting other practitioners. His wife, Zhou Jin, has been placed under close police surveillance. During his trial the judge did not allow Guo Wei to finish his final statement.


8.       Two Practitioners Sentenced to Life in Prison and 20-Year Term Respectively for Printing Falun Gong Books


Liang Jiantian and Liu Jingsong, from Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province. On November 2, 2000, they were tried and convicted in a Guangzhou court for printing Falun Gong books. Liang was sentenced to life in prison and Liu was given a 20-year term.


9.       Two Practitioners were Sentenced to 1 and 2 Years in Prison, Respectively in Shandong Province


Zhao Wei and Zhao, from Nanyao Village, Shihuiyao Town, Yantai, Shandong Province. They were sentenced to prison terms for distributing Falun Gong flyers. Zhao Wei was sentenced to one year in prison and the other practitioner, Zhao, was sentenced to two years.


10.  Peng Mi who Attended Guangzhou Falun Gong Conference was Sentenced in Wuhan City, Hubei Province


Ms. Peng Mi, female, from Wuhan, Hubei Province. In November 1999, she was arrested in Wuhan City for attending a Guangzhou Falun Gong Experience Sharing Conference (Conference in which practitioners meet to share their experiences from practicing Falun Gong). From November 22, 1999 to February 2000, she had been detained in the sanatorium of the Wuhan Police Department under close supervision and was later arrested. She was sentenced to 10 months in prison for selling Falun Gong materials when she was employed in Shenshen Company.


11.  Practitioners Sentenced at the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court in Beijing


Xue Hairong and Hang Xue, from Beijing. Xue Hairong received a seven-year sentence for downloading and distributing Falun Gong-related materials from the internet. Xue was sentenced alongside four others at the Beijing No 1 Intermediate People’s Court. Some 11 practitioners, including one named Hang Xue, received sentences at the Fengtai District People’s Court for “organizing illegal gatherings of Falun Gong ... followers, and printing and distributing materials propagating the Falun Gong ... doctrine.” Furthermore, 21 members accused of similar activities received unspecified sentences at the People’s Courts of Haidian, Fangshan and Tongzhou.

12.  Nine Practitioners Sentenced to Prison Terms of up to 8 Years for Distributing Falun Gong Materials in Sichuan Province


Ms. Zhou Chenghui, female, 55, from Salian Township, Sichuan Province, was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment.


Ms. Zhang Jiarong, female, 37, from Panlian Township, Diansuo Village, Fourth Unit, Sichuan Province, was sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment.


Ms. Song Jun, female, 35, from Salian Township, Sichuan Province, Mr. Wang Yuanpin, male, 56, from Salian Township, Sichuan Province, Mr. Zhuang Deling, male, 60’s, from Binggu Township, Sichuan Province, Ms. Zhang Zhenghuan, female, 50’s, from Binggu Township, Sichuan Province, Ms. Zhang Hongying, female, 35, from Guibang Township, Sichuan Province, Mr. Li Yinqi, male, 38, from Caochang Township, Sichuan Province, and Mr. Zeng Shihua, male, 36, high school teacher, from Pingshan Village, Sichuan Province, were each sentenced to 1-5 years imprisonment.


In addition, there are more than 10 practitioners being held in the Miyi County Detention Center, Sichuan Province. They were arrested while distributing materials about Falun Gong on December 14, 2000.


13.  Six Practitioners were Heavily Fined, Detained and Sentenced for Distributing Falun Gong Materials in Hubei Province


Ms. Liu Yazhen, female; Ms. Chen Youhong, female; Chen Jingjiang, from Shashi, Hubei Province. The Shashi Public Security Bureau in Hubei Province extorted about 10,000 Yuan from family members of each Falun Gong practitioner detained by the public security officers. In the last ten days of December 2000, Liu Yazhen, Chen Youhong and Chen Jingjiang were arrested because they had distributed materials related to Falun Gong and were sentenced to 3~4 years of imprisonment. Other practitioners, including Du Huifang, Li Delin, and Tao Shue, were arrested and detained for about 3 months.


14.  Liu Jufen Arrested for Distributing Falun Gong Materials in Sichuan Province


Ms. Liu Jufen, female, from Jintang County, Sichuan Province. In mid October 2000, the local police arrested Liu Jufen for distributing Falun Gong materials. Liu’s home was searched. Liu Jufen was sentenced to 4 years in prison.


15.  Cao Chengming and Yang Cuilan Sentenced to 6 Years in Prison for Distributing Falun Gong Materials


Cao Chengming, 53, Yang Cuilan, 42, from Tianjin City. In October 2000, Yang Cuilan was sentenced to a six-year jail term for reproducing and disseminating Falun Gong fliers, audiotapes and videocassettes. Cao Chengming was sentenced to 6 years in prison for unfolding a Falun Gong banner in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square on October 1, 2000.

16.  Two Female Practitioners Secretly Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison


Ms. Zheng Xuhong, female; Ms. Zheng Weihong, female. They are from Wuyi, Zhejiang Province. The county court secretly sentenced sisters Zheng Xuhong and Zheng Weihong to 2 years in prison for distributing Falun Gong materials. The police department refused to let their relatives and friends visit them. It is said that their younger brother, a Ph.D. student, is also a Falun Gong practitioner and has already been expelled from school; his whereabouts are unknown.


17.  Two Senior Women Sentenced for Distributing Falun Gong Materials in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province


Ms. Chen, female, over 60; Ms. Cai, female, over 60; Chen Yanjuan; Li Zheyong, from Zhuhai, Guangdong Province. Chen, Cai and Chen Yanjuan were sentenced to two years of imprisonment under the charge of distributing Falun Gong material. Li Zheyong was sentenced to one and a half years of imprisonment. The reason is that Li went to a practitioner’s home to help her child wash clothes.


18.  A Senior Colonel Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province


Mr. Yang Xingfu, male, from Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, was the senior colonel in Nanjing’s Military Region. He was court-martialed and sentenced to 3 years in jail for distributing Falun Gong materials.


19.  Lin Yongxu was Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison for Posting Falun Gong Articles


Mr. Lin Yongxu, male, employed in Zhuhai Geli Corporation, Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province. He was arrested after his article clarifying the truth of Falun Gong was posted on the intranet of the company for which he worked. He was sentenced to 2 years in prison.


20.  A Criminal Court Judge was Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison for Selling Falun Gong Books in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province


Mr. Hu Qingyun, male, judge of No.1 Criminal Court of the Supreme Court of Justice, Jiangxi Province. Hu Qingyun was arrested on July 21, 1999. Hu was charged with running a business that sold 200,000 copies of Falun Gong books. On January 10, 2001, after being held in custody for 18 months, a district People’s Court in Nanchang City, Jiangxi sentenced him to 7 years in prison for “engaging in illegal business” and spreading the teachings of Falun Gong.


21.  Students Sentenced to 2~6 Years in Prison for Downloading and Distributing Falun Gong Materials in Wuhan City


Cui Hai and Peng Cong, students in Wuhan City, Hubei Province. They were sentenced, along with 7 other students, to jail terms between two to six years under the charge of “organizing and using the evil religion to disrupt law enforcement”. All they did was distributed Falun Gong material downloaded from the Internet and encouraged others to join the peaceful appeals.


22.  Song Chuying was Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison


Ms. Song Chuying, female, around 50 years old, from Mentougou District, Beijing. In August 2000, Song Chuying was detained because she distributed Falun Gong materials.


From August 2000 to January 9, 2001, she was detained in Beijing’s No. 7 Police Station and in Mentougou Detention Center, respectively. As she insisted on practicing Falun Gong, she was sentenced to 4 years in prison. She refuted this charge and appealed to the Intermediate People’s Court. However, her appeal was denied.


On January 9, 2001, she was sent to a prison to serve her sentence.


23.  Hong Weisheng and Hou Aila were Sentenced for Making Falun Gong Materials


Mr. Hong Weisheng, male, 47, from Wuhan City, Hubei Province. He was a Falun Gong contact person in Wuhan between 1994 and 1995. Hong was arrested for organizing practitioners to share their experiences, introducing Falun Gong in several provinces, and photocopying Falun Gong materials. Mr. Hong was sentenced to 4 years in prison in January 2001. Ms. Hou Aila, his wife, was also arrested in November 2000 for unknown reasons. Hong Rongren, their daughter, is a freshman in junior middle school and is having a difficult living as a result of her parents’ arrests.


24.  Cheng Guangyuan and Wang Guijiao were Sentenced for Making Falun Gong Materials


Mr. Chen Guangyuan, male, 50, Wuhan City, Hubei province, China. He was a Falun Gong contact person. Chen was arrested in March 2000 for organizing experience sharing meetings among local practitioners and photocopying Falun Gong materials. In January 2001, he was sentenced to 4 years in prison. Ms. Wang Guijiao, his 48-years-old wife, is also a practitioner. She went to Beijing to protest her husband’s arrest and criminal sentence. She was arrested and is now being held at a female detention center in Wuhan. Their young daughter and elderly parents in their 70’s are left at home in extreme financial difficulties.


25.  Wang Biliang Detained and Accused of “Instigating Subversion of State Power” for Talking to People about Falun Gong


Mr. Wang Biliang, male, from Dingxing County, Hebei Province. Wang Biliang has been detained at Dingxing County Detention Center since Oct. 9, 2000 for clarifying the truth about Falun Gong to people. The police regarded him as a “key member”. The police ransacked his home, confiscated his private possessions, and recently brought him to the court. He pleaded innocent in the court. The court in Dingxing decided that it could not handle the case and transferred it to the Baoding Intermediate Court. He was accused of “instigating subversion of state power.” His family was not allowed to visit him.


26.  Yuan Yuchun Detained and Sentenced in Dalian City, Liaoning Province


Ms. Yuan Yuchun, female, from Jinzhou District, Dalian City, Liaoning Province. Yuan Yuchun was detained in Jinzhou District Detention Center for more than 6 months since the end of October 1999. Then she was sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment with a 3-year reprieve. She was again detained in Jinzhou District Detention Center for distributing Falun Gong materials. She is still in custody.


27.  Yu Guiying Sentenced to 1 Year in Prison for Talking about Falun Gong


Ms. Yu Guiying, female, former contact person of Wuhu Falun Gong Assistance Center, Wuhu City, Anhui Province. Ms. Yu Guiying was sentenced to one year in jail for talking with others about Falun Gong and distributing Falun Gong articles.


28.  Practitioners were Sentenced to Various Jail Terms for Distributing Falun Gong Materials


Ms. Chen Yumei, female, a teacher in Liutang Center Middle School, Liutang town, Linshui County, Sichuan Province. Ms. Chen was arrested in October 2000 for distributing Falun Gong flyers. On March 15, 2001, she was sentenced to five years in prison.


Ms. Li Yulan, female, employee of Dalian Oil Company in Wafangdian City, Liaoning Province. Ms. Li Yulan was arrested and sentenced to two years in jail for making and distributing Falun Gong materials.


Xue Hairong, Beijing. Xue Hairong was sentenced in Beijing to seven years in prison for downloading, making, and distributing materials from Falun Gong website.


Mr. Guo Xiaojun, male, a young faculty member in the Department of Electronics and Information Science in Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai. Mr. Guo Xiaojun was detained in August 2000 because he practiced Falun Gong in public and distributed Falun Gong materials. Mr. Guo was sentenced to 2 years in prison.


29.  Zhang Yuhui Arrested and Detained for Posting Articles on the Internet Supportive of Falun Gong in Guangdong Province


Mr. Zhang Yuhui, male, 36 years old, a businessman from mainland China, living in Macao. His wife is a Macao resident. In November 1999, Mr. Zhang visited Guangdong Province for a business trip. He was arrested on his way back to Macao under the name of releasing through China-based and overseas websites articles supportive of Falun Gong. Mr. Zhang Yuhui was taken into custody on November 10, 1999 in the 2nd Detention Center of Kaiping city, Guangdong Province. He was detained for 3 months.


On December 18, 2000, Zhang Yuhui was arrested in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, for spreading pro-Falun Gong remarks on the Internet when Chinese President Jiang Zhemin was visiting Macao. He was charged with “ inciting to subvert state power” and has not been released ever since.


30.  Xu Guanglin Sentenced for Sharing Experiences and Distributing Falun Gong Flyers in Wuhan City, Hubei Province


Mr. Xu Guanglin, male, 28, a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine in Zhuru Town of Caidian District, Wuhan City, Hubei Province; Xu Lihua, female, younger sister of Xu Guanglin. In March 2000, Xu Guanglin was arrested while sharing experiences in another practitioner’s home. He went on a hunger strike for half a year (March to September 2000) while in police custody. The guards force-fed him everyday. His nose, esophagus and stomach were all seriously injured from the daily force-feedings Xu Guanglin received in prison. In September 2000, he was sentenced to 3 years in prison after two rounds of trials. His current whereabouts are unknown. Xu Guanglin’s sister Xu Lihua was arrested on October 23, 2000 for distributing Falun Gong flyers. Her family was told that she will be sentenced to jail time.
