Zhang Yuping Whipped, Paralyzed and Tortured for Being a Falun Gong Practitioner
Print  E-mail

Zhang Yuping, female student, early twenties, resident of Changchun City, Jilin Province.

In early March 2002, Ms. Zhang Yuping, was arrested for being a Falun Gong practitioner. The arrest took place as Zhang Yuping watch her three year old child at play on the street. She was sent to the First Division of the Changchun City Police Station, where she was tortured for more than 30 hours with methods such as whipping and the “tiger bench.”[1]

This torture caused paralysis of her lower body. On March 9, 2002, Ms. Zhang was sent to the No.3 Detention Center of Changchun City. She was placed in room 307 where she was unable to relieve herself. In protest at this she went on hunger strike, requesting unconditional release. The guards then force-fed her. They punctured her lips, fingertips and face with needles, and applied an unknown substance to her lips, which caused gross infection of her entire mouth. Ms. Zhang was suffering profound motor-sensory deficits.

[1] The “tiger bench” is an instrument of torture. Practitioners are forced to sit on a small iron bench approximately 20 cm (6 inches) in height. Their knees tied together. With their hands tied behind their backs or placed on their knees, they are forced to sit bolt upright looking directly ahead. They are not allowed to turn their head, close their eyes, talk or move. Inmates are assigned to compel the victim to remain constantly motionless. Usually some hard objects are inserted underneath the lower legs or ankles to make it harder to bear the pain.
