Female Practitioners Tortured and One is Paralyzed in the Banqiao Women’s Labor Camp in Tianjin City
Print  E-mail

Since July 1999, the Dagang District Banqiao Women’s Labor Camp in Tianjin City has tortured numerous Falun Gong practitioners to death, disability, and injury. Because of the excessive and heavy physical labor, and the extremely poor nutrition and sleeping conditions, it is considered normal for practitioners' bodies to become swollen, to have body joints deformed, and to even develop heart problems. Guards have shocked many practitioners with electric batons, most often in their mouths and armpits. Since 2003, after practitioner Ms. Li Shumin was tortured to death, another practitioner, Ms. Zhao Dewen, 49, was murdered by torture on June 4, 2003. The following are some recent cases of practitioners being persecuted in this labor camp:

Ms. Bai Hong, in her 50s, was arrested and sentenced to forced labor because she persisted in practicing Falun Gong. She went on a hunger strike in order to protest all the unfair torture she had suffered in the labor camp. Because of this, the guards force-fed her. Every time they force-fed her, they ordered some inmates to drag Ms. Bai, who had been tortured severely and could not even move about freely, to a room. Then guards pressed her into a chair and ordered the inmates to pry open her mouth. Then, the guards inserted a tube through which they would force food down her throat. After the force-feeding, the tube was covered with blood. At present, Ms. Bai has become paralyzed from the torture. She lies on a bed, with no control of her bowels and bladder. However, the guards still continue to torture her.

Ms. Chen Zhaoyun, in her 30s, is a resident of Ninghe County of Tianjin City. Because she is a Falun Gong practitioner, the local government has torn her house down. Since she began her detention in the labor camp, she has been forced to do heavy physical labor nearly every day. She was frequently forced to work as long as 21 hours a day. She was only allowed to sleep for two to three hours each day. Because of this long-term torture, at present Ms. Chen has lost most of her ability to hear and to see clearly. She is unable to walk normally, and needs someone to help her. However, even with help, she can barely move her legs.

Ms. Li Jing, in her 30s, worked in Dagang District. In 2000, she was sentenced to forced labor and imprisoned at the Banqiao Women’s Labor Camp because she practiced Falun Gong. Since then, she has resisted the forceful brainwashing and suffered from physical torture for a long time. Whenever it was time for her to sleep, the guards forced her to stand even though she was exhausted from working all day. On cold winter nights, Ms. Li was locked up with little clothing in a freezing cold cell. Once, she was handcuffed to a wire net in the labor camp for a long time, and not allowed to move.

Ms. Yang Fenxia, 50, and Ms. Yang Xiuying, 57, both suffered from long-term mental and physical torture just because they refused to be forcibly brainwashed. They forced to carry gunnysacks weighing about 110 pounds. At night, they were not allowed to sleep, and instead had to stand in the yard for a long time as punishment. In summer, they were not allowed to drive away the mosquitoes that were biting them, or the guards would begin immediately to beat them. In freezing winter days, in the bone-chilling wind, guards forced Ms. Yang Xiuying to take off her winter jacket and stand in the snow for the whole night. She nearly froze. Moreover, guards frequently ordered inmates to beat her. Recently, these two senior practitioners have been locked up separately. Nobody is allowed to contact them. They have been going through even more brutal torture. No one knows whether they are alive or dead.
