A Math Teacher Tortured to Death, and Family Could not Seek Justice
Print  E-mail

Mr. Wu Yuan, male, age 44, worked as a math teacher at the Beilu Middle School in Lingyuan City, Liaoning Province. After he began practicing Falun Gong, he often helped poor students pay their school fees.  His students and their families regarded Mr. Wu as a good person and teacher.

On the afternoon of August 14, 2002, the head of the Public Security Bureau and the "610 Office,"1 arrested Mr. Wu at his home, and sent him to the Lingyuan Detention Center. They also went to his school to threaten his students. They forced Mr. Wu’s students to testify against him and to sign statements slandering him. On September 26, 2002, Mr. Wu was sentenced to four years in Dabei Prison at Shenyang.

On December 8, 2003, Mr. Wu's family received an unsigned letter from the 11th Confinement Section of Chenyang Dabei Secondary Prison, stating that Mr. Wu had esophageal cancer and would be released to his family. On the morning of December 10, Mr. Wu's wife, Liang Xiuyu, arrived at the hospital ward in Chenyang Prison to arrange her husband’s release. Because her husband was so emaciated, Liang Xiuyu didn't immediately recognize him. When Mr. Wu attempted to speak to his wife, the police interrupted and urged her to complete the procedures for releasing him for medical treatment. Liang Xiuyu was forced to leave after only a 30-minute visit with her husband. She did not know at that time that this would be the last time she ever saw him alive.

At 6 p.m. the same day, Liang Xiuyu received a message from the prison stating that her husband had died. The next day, she saw her husband’s body at the funeral home, and noticed that his stomach had black and blue bruises on it, and that his back was covered with red marks. Mr. Wu’s nose and ears were stuffed with cotton balls. When Liang Xiuyu questioned the policemen about the cotton balls, they told her that it was required for cremation. She requested an autopsy report and a documented medical history, but the prison refused to provide them, stating that the medical history had already been sent to the coroner. It was obvious to her that her husband’s physical condition was the result of his having been tortured to death; however, she could not seek justice. No lawyer or court in China was allowed to take on a Falun Gong practitioner’s case.

1The "610 Office" is an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems.
