1.1 Li Hongpin Forced to Leave Home to Avoid Future Persecution
Victim:
Li Hongping, female, Lanzhou City, Gansu Province
Location of Detention and Torture:
The Lanzhou Chemical Industry Company, Lanzhou City, Gansu Province
Perpetrator:
Staff of the Public Security Unit of the Lanzhou Chemical Industry Company, Lanzhou City, Gansu Province
A Brief Report of the Incident:
Since July 20, 1999, the intense persecution of Falun Gong practitioners by the Public Security Unit of the Lanzhou Chemical Industry Company has destroyed Li Hongping’s family. Her parents-in-law, husband and their daughter are all Falun Gong practitioners. Police have sent Ms. Li’s mother-in-law, Bai Jinyu, to a labor camp because Ms. Bai practices Falun Gong. They have detained Ms. Li’s father-in-law, Zhao Baoting, and tortured him for three months, since Ms. Zhao went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong in earlier of 2001. Also in 2001, Ms. Li’s husband, Zhao Xudong, was sentenced two-year forced labor in a labor camp.
Knowing that she, too, would be sent to a labor camp, Ms. Li had no other alternative but to leave her home to escape the constant persecution. Ms. Li’s family has been destroyed.

1.2 Ms. Wang Xingui Forced to Leave Home
Victims:
Wang Xingui, female, farmer from Hejiadian, Shandan Village, Wushan County, Gansu Province
Location of Detention and Torture:
1. The Xuanwu District Detention Center, Beijing
2. Hejiadian, Shandan Village, Wushan County, Gansu Province
Perpetrators:
1. Two male guards from Cell 11 and 12, the Xuanwu District Detention Center, Beijing
2. Police of Hejiadian, Shandan Village, Wushan County, Gansu Province
A Brief Report of the Incident:
Wang Xingui, her husband Mr. Huang Yuanyi, and their two children are all Falun Gong practitioners. Since the July 1999 banning of Falun Gong in China, they have been arrested, detained, beaten, and fined many times. Their home has also been ransacked frequently and they have become destitute. On November 23, 2000, to avoid being detained, the couple was forced to leave home and live on the streets. On December 22, 2000, they went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong. Mr. Huang’s mother and two children also went to Beijing to appeal in early January 2001. Then Mr. Huang, his mother and two children were arrested and escorted back to Wushan County. Police only released Ms. Wang’s 10-year-old daughter. Ms. Huang, his mother, and one 18-year-old son are still being detained. During that time, Mr. Huang’s 66-year-old father could not bear the persecution from the local police to his family, and committed suicide. Mr. Huang’s family was not allowed to hold funeral for Mr. Huang’s father.
In Beijing, Ms. Wang was detained at the Xuanwu District Detention Center. She refused to give her name and address; as a result, she was beaten by two male guards from Cells 11 and 12, and another prison guard. Ms. Wang went on a hunger strike for seventeen days to protest the torture. Fearing that she would die from the hunger strike, the police dragged her out of the detention center and left her on a street in Beijing on the evening of the 19th day of her hunger strike. She was on the verge of death. Her feet were frostbitten. In the Detention Center, she slept on the cement floor without any covers. It was bitter cold, with the temperature hovering around 15 or 16 C0 below zero. She cannot return to her home because she will most likely be arrested again. She has to live in exile in other provinces.
Ms. Wang’s grandmother-in-law, who is over 80 years old, lives alone, with no one to take care of her. Ms. Wang’s another 15-year-old son is having a very difficult time working on the farm to support two families. Ms. Wang’s 10-year-old daughter is in foster care.
