Cases of Extrajudicial Execution of Falun Gong Practitioners in Liaoning Province
Print  E-mail

Overview

As the persecution continues thousands of Falun Gong practitioners in Liaoning province have been detained, treated inhumanely and tortured. Their own government has turned on them.  They have lost their jobs, homes, families, life’s savings, for practicing Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance. At least 34 Falun Gong practitioners have died at the hands of the authorities in institutions throughout Liaoning province including company security centers, police stations, jails, detention centers, and labor camps. Below is a partial list of confirmed executions due to the systematic abuse and torture carried out against Falun Gong practitioners in Liaoning province.

I. Seven Practitioners Tortured to Death in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province

1. Wang Hong Tortured to Death in Longshan Labor Camp, Shenyang City

Victim:

Wang Hong, female, 39, resident of Changtan town, Liaozhong county, Liaoning province

Location of Torture and Death:

1)      Longshan Labor Camp, Shenyang city, Liaoning province

2)      Zhangshi Labor Camp, Shenyang city, Liaoning province

3)      Shenyang city Detention Center, Shenyang city, Liaoning province

Perpetrators:

1)      Director and staff of Longshan Labor Camp, Shenyang city, Liaoning province

2)      Director and staff of Zhangshi Labor Camp, Shenyang city, Liaoning province

3)      Director and staff of Shenyang city Detention Center, Shenyang city, Liaoning province

A Brief Report of the Incident:

On December 1, 2000, Ms. Wang Hong went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop the persecution of Falun Gong.  She was arrested in Beijing and escorted back to Shenyang city's Longshan Labor Camp, where she was frequently beaten and tortured.  In the detention center she suffered electric shocks and ice-cold showers (in April). Bottles of boiling water were used to burn her back and lower belly and a plastic bottle was repeatedly forced into her vagina.

Because she did not give up Falun Gong practice, later they sent her to In Zhangshi Labor Camp. In order to force her to renounce Falun Gong, she was tied up with rope. The police stuffed her mouth with towels and beat her for several hours with wooden boards. She was beaten about her head, face, and other parts of her body while a male prisoner sat on top of her.

Finally she was transferred to In Longshan Labor Camp. In order to “reform her”, police forced her head between her legs, tied her legs tightly together, and then tied her hands behind her back.  They ordered her to remain standing. If she failed to do so, they would beat her. She was forced to remain in this position for up to 20 hours. She was also forced to sit on the floor with her legs extended in front of her. Then her head was tied to one leg, and her hands were tied behind her back, which also lasted 20 hours. The camp supervisor also incited prisoners to grab her by the neck, almost choking her to death.

The continuous beatings resulted in kidney failure. Even after becoming critically ill from the beatings, the authorities at the labor camp would not let her family take her home. She was seriously injured and covered with large bruises. On August 22, 2001, Ms. Wang Hong was finally brought home;  however, she died on August 31, 2001.

1) “Six Falungong followers die in police custody in China”, AFP, Wednesday September 19, 2001, 2:56 PM.

BEIJING, Sept 19 (AFP) - Six people, including four women, have died in police custody in China after being detained for allegiance to the banned Falungong spiritual [group], the group's US-based headquarters said Tuesday.

The six all died either in official custody or in detention centers, with some being beaten or tortured to death, the Falun Dafa Information Center said in a press release.

The fatalities bring to 278 the number of followers of the [...] [group] who have died in police custody since Falungong was outlawed as an "[Jiang Zemin government's slanderous term omitted]" just over two years ago, the center said.

It added that unidentified "government sources" in China had put the figure at more than 1,000.

Such cases are notoriously difficult to verify, but independent human rights groups have put the toll at more than 150.

One of those who died, 33-year-old Li Mei from east China's Shandong province, died in May after suffering a broken spine and other injuries at a "transformation school" in the province's Laiyang city, the center said.

While in the facility she had practiced Falungong exercises of the sort performed by [group] followers, it added, leading to the torture.

Another woman, Wang Hong, 39, from Liaoning province, also in east China, died at home on August 31 after being repeatedly tortured at a labor camp after refusing to renounce her belief in Falungong, the center said.

And He Xueyan, from Sichuan province in China's southwest, was beaten to death in police custody in April, it added, saying her body had not been released yet to her family.

Two male Falungong followers died of unknown causes while in custody, the group said, while authorities said another woman had jumped from a moving train during transit in custody.

The group noted that a series of other followers had allegedly jumped from trains or high buildings in mysterious circumstances in the past.

Tens of thousands of Falungong practitioners have been sent to "re-education through labor" centers since the Chinese government banned the group [...] in July 1999.

The Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy, which has been independently verifying the reports, has said it has been able to confirm 156 deaths of Falungong adherents so far.

2) “Falun Gong says six members died in Chinese custody”, Reuters, Wednesday September 19, 2001, 9:26 PM.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Six more adherents of the Falun Gong spiritual movement have died in Chinese custody following severe abuse, the group's U.S.-based information center said on Wednesday.

The four women and two men were held in labor camps or police custody around China during or before their deaths, the Falun Dafa Information Center said in a statement.

Police and government officials in most of the six cities where the deaths were reported to have occurred were not available for comment.

[...]

Relatives of the six reported they had been beaten or tortured, although the bodies of three of those who died had still not been recovered, the information center said.

The information center said local government officials gave 30,000 yuan ($3,625) to the family of a woman from the eastern province of Shandong in a cover-up attempt.

The family of the woman -- whose spine was broken and lower limbs paralyzed -- was forced to sign a statement saying: "Li Mei died of suicide. Her death has nothing to do with others", the information center said.

Chinese authorities have acknowledged several deaths of Falun Gong members in custody, but say most resulted from suicide or illness.

One of the victims was arrested for circulating Falun Gong material and the others for their beliefs, the center said.

Falun Gong has said more than 50,000 practitioners have been sent to prisons, labor camps and mental hospitals since China banned the group in 1999.

The information center says it has details of 278 Falun Gong adherents who have died from torture during detention in China and estimates the actual death toll exceeds 1,000.

A Brief Report of the Incident:

In July 1999, Ms. Sun Hongyan went to Beijing and appealed to the central government to end the persecution of Falun Gong. Consequently, she was removed from her teaching post by the school authorities.

On August 1, 2000, Ms. Sun Hongyan was sent to Longshan Labor Camp because she went to Beijing again to appeal for Falun Gong. During her detention, she was watched closely, brainwashed with anti-Falun Gong propaganda and forced to do hard labor. Ba Qijin, the principal of her school, led some school employees to ransack Ms. Sun’s home and confiscated Falun Gong materials and 3000 Yuan (Chinese currency). The labor camp authorities fined Ms. Sun 13000 Yuan. Ms. Sun went on a hunger strike twice to protest the illegal detention and maltreatment.  She was beaten during her hunger strike and was force-fed by guards. Since she did not denounce Falun Gong, in November 2000, she was placed in solitary confinement, and was forced to read anti-Falun Gong news.

In February 2001, she was sent to the No. 463 Hospital in Shenyang city. In late February 2001, Ms. Sun was transferred to Shenyang Dabei Jail Hospital. There she was locked in the basement and frequently beaten. She was injected with unknown medication. After that, she could not sit up by herself and lost control of her bowels.  Two weeks later when she was released, she was covered in open wounds and was barely conscious. She died in April 2001.

1)      "Falun Adherents Detained And Die In China", Reuters, Oct. 26, 2000

HONG KONG, Oct 26, 2000 -- (Reuters) Chinese police on Thursday bundled members of the banned Falun Gong spiritual movement into vans and drove them out of Tiananmen Square, witnesses and a Hong Kong human rights group said.

Witnesses in Beijing said they saw a commotion in the center of the square at the heart of the Chinese capital at around 1 p.m. (0500 GMT), after somebody threw a bunch of white leaflets in the air.

Dozens of uniformed and plainclothes police rushed to the area and surrounded a group of about a hundred people, although it was not clear if they were all protesters.

Witnesses said they saw dozens being driven away in police minivans, which circled the square for most of the day. Others were detained after identifying themselves as Falun Gong practitioners when questioned by police.

The Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights & Democracy said the Chinese police had stepped up vigilance on Falun Gong to forestall any upcoming mass protests, as followers had arrived in Beijing for a planned petition on October 30, exactly a year after Falun Gong was labeled [...].

The Hong Kong group said mass protests were very likely to take place on October 30.

The spiritual movement, also known as Falun Dafa, combines meditation and exercise with a doctrine loosely rooted in Buddhist and Taoist teachings.

It first rattled Beijing in April last year with a 10,000-strong protest around the country's leadership compound, and the movement was banned later that year. Its practitioners have since staged daily protests in Tiananmen Square.

MORE FOLLOWERS DIE

On Thursday, the human rights group said two more Falun Gong followers had died of ill treatment in police custody in China.

A total of 59 Falun Gong adherents had died of abuse in detention since July last year when Beijing began a crackdown on the movement, the information center said.

One of the latest victims, Qi Fengqin, was a 43-year-old government official in the eastern Shandong province.

She was arrested on September 10 for distributing materials about Falun Gong and the persecution of its practitioners.

On October 5, she started a hunger strike during detention. On October 10, police force-fed her, which damaged her lung and stomach. She was sent to the hospital on October 11 and died afterwards, the Hong Kong group said.

Police arrested 34-year-old businessman Zhong Hengjie in Shenyang city in northeastern Liaoning province in September. This month, his family received a notification that Zhong had committed suicide on October 3 during his detention.

But his friends and relatives suspected that Zhong was beaten to death, the information center said.

2)      Falun Gong, police square off in China's Tiananmen Square”, AP, Oct. 26, 2000

BEIJING (AP) -- Members of the outlawed Falun Gong [group] staged a brief but large protest on Tiananmen Square on Thursday, scattering leaflets and raising banners before Chinese police violently ended the demonstration.

Plainclothes police in groups of 10 or more pounced on small bands of [group] members spread throughout the plaza in central Beijing. The officers pummeled and shoved protesters into police vans.

One man, thrown to the ground, was kicked in the stomach and head until blood ran from his mouth onto the gray flagstones. An elderly woman was dragged by her hair for several yards as bystanders pleaded with police to stop.

At least 100 [group] members were taken away in a 15-minute flurry of activity Thursday afternoon. One witness saw 30 police vans filled with protesters driving off the square, which could put the numbers detained over several hundred.

Columns of paramilitary police marched onto the square as tourists were cleared from China's best known public monument for about 20 minutes to bring the protest under control.

The protest was the second large-scale demonstration by Falun Gong members this month. On Oct. 1 -- China's National Day -- followers used similar tactics, provoking a rough response and forcing police to close off the plaza, a highly embarrassing act on a public holiday that celebrates Communist Party rule.

Since then, the government has renewed a smear campaign in state media, accusing members of conspiring with alleged enemies -- exiled dissidents and supporters of independence for Taiwan, Tibet and the Muslim northwest.

Falun Gong members claim the group has no political ambitions but want the freedom to practice their meditation exercises, which they say promote health and morality. The government has accused the [group] of [...]

Apparently caught unawares by the Oct. 1 protest, police seemed better prepared for Thursday's action -- which coincided with the legislature's decision a year ago to use an anti-cult law to imprison group leaders.

Hundreds of uniformed soldiers, police and plainclothes officers waited in buses parked on the square. The plainclothes officers ran in formation to quell each outburst.

Banners raised were quickly snatched away. Police threw one man to the ground, kicking him and punching his arm until he let go of a banner. Police scooped leaflets up before others could get them.

``Justice is clear. Good and evil will be repaid in kind,'' one leaflet, seen before the protest, said. It accused Chinese President Jiang Zemin of being a ``tyrant'' who ignored constitutional guarantees of religious freedom: ``Jiang Zemin's blood debts are piling up. He's guilty of monstrous crimes.''

Another leaflet gave detailed allegations of the torture and killing of group members in police custody.

Since the government banned the [group] 15 months ago as a public menace and a threat to communist rule, Falun Gong members claim at least 67 followers have died in custody. The government has confirmed some of the deaths but denied any mistreatment of detained [group] members.

Among the latest deaths were Ji Fengqin, who died in Liaocheng city after prison guards force-fed her to break a hunger strike, and Zong Hengjie, whom prison officials in northeastern Shenyang city said committed suicide, the Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy reported Thursday.

Police have detained tens of thousands of followers in the crackdown, most only briefly. Rights groups estimate that 5,000 have been sent to labor camps without trial and the government has confirmed convicting 151 principal organizers. They have been sentenced to prison terms of up to 18 years.

3)      Irish Times: “China cannot cope with [...] dissenters”, Oct. 31, 2000

From Conor O'Clery, in Beijing

CHINA: In a society where fear stifles dissent, the one thing the authorities cannot cope with is a movement made up of peaceful dissenters who have no fear.

The evidence for this could be seen during the last two days in Tiananmen Square, where waves of middle-aged and elderly members of Falun Gong defied a ban on their organization by the Chinese government, offering themselves up as martyrs to security police who sometimes beat and kicked them, and hauled them off to detention centers.

But still they kept coming all day long, reminding the Chinese government that "they haven't gone away, you know", despite being prohibited [...] exactly a year ago.

Almost every day since then, small numbers of Falun Gong adherents from all over China have demonstrated in Tiananmen Square, the symbolic heart of the nation, but to mark the first anniversary of their banning, several hundred turned up on Thursday and yesterday. Despite deploying around the vast piazza in large numbers, the security police and soldiers cannot stop them.

Tiananmen Square is a Mecca for Chinese and foreign tourists - to close it would be a massive defeat for the government - and Falun Gong members are indistinguishable from ordinary sightseers. They wander on to the square and gather in small groups, then announce their presence by doing distinctive exercises with arms stretched upwards, or by unfurling banners or scattering leaflets in the air. Immediately the police pounce, running back and forth under the direction of plain-clothes security officials who themselves pose as tourists.

Yesterday, when an elderly man shouted "Falun Gong is good", seven plain-clothes officers threw him down on to the hard flagstones and punched and kicked him, then carried him bodily to a police vehicle.

Journalists and tourists have witnessed dozens of such incidents over the last two days, during which an estimated 500 followers of Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, were taken into custody. Security men lashed out with boots and fists at two young men who tried to unfurl a yellow banner.

A slogan was ripped from three elderly women by police who pulled one by the hair and punched another as they were forced into a police van, which sped away with horn blaring. A man was led away bleeding from the mouth after being thumped. Another who tried to display a sign was bowled over and kicked in the chest, then punched repeatedly in the arms to make him let go of the banner. Police seized a camera from a Western visitor and ripped out the film.

There is no accurate record of what happened to the detainees, but from past experience most were released within hours and others sent to labor camps or reeducation centers.

The incidents - the most sustained protests against the communist government since the 1989 student movement - are never reported in the media, but everyone in Beijing knows that to walk near the square now is to risk being stopped and forced to produce papers by security police. Many people have been seen remonstrating with the police.

Falun Gong is a mixture of Taoism and Buddhism and traditional Chinese breathing exercises. Its exiled leader, Li Hongzhi, lives in New York. The organization was banned after 15,000 members demonstrated outside Zongnanhai government compound in Beijing last year against ill treatment of its members.

It has since been accused of [...]

Two members of Falun Gong, Qi Fengqin (43) and Zong Hengjie (34) died in police custody over the past month because of violent treatment, according to the Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy in Hong Kong. The group claims that 59 have died in custody since the government crackdown on the sect began in July 1999.

The government acknowledges that several have died but says most committed suicide or died of natural causes. Ominously for the authorities, there are reports of protests outside Beijing. The Hong Kong group said yesterday that in Changchun in Jilin province, 100 Falun Gong adherents have been on a protest hunger strike for five days.

The protests are expected to continue today and Monday.

News Reports:

1)      Falun Gong follower seeks refugee status”, Ottawa Citizen, Dec. 9, 2000

Saturday December 9, 2000, Ottawa Citizen

A Chinese student attending Memorial University in Newfoudland is seeking refugee status in Canada after his mother was killed and his father was imprisoned in China for practicing the banned meditation exercises of Falun Gong.

Chris Xu, 23, who also practices Falun Gong, says the Chinese government's ongoing crackdown against the spiritual movement combined with the loss of his parents' financial support would make it dangerous and impoverishing to return to China.

"I fear going back," says Mr. Xu, who is working on his MBA, "My father's situation is still unknown, I have to make a refugee claim and I want to let people know what is happening in China to practitioners of Falun Gong."

Mr. Xu says his mother Shi Bei, 49, was starved to death in September after being incarcerated in a mental hospital for refusing to renounce her belief in the spiritual principles of Falun Gong.

He says Mrs. Bei had become a promoter of the practice in Fuyang City in 1996, when Falun Gong was still permitted and growing wildly in popularity. But in May 1998, she was arrested and questioned by police as the Chinese government began moving toward outlawing the practice.

He says his father was also arrested and sent to Laodongyue Jail.

Beijing formally banned Falun Gong in July 1999 and in May of this year -- "although there was nothing wrong with her," says her son -- Mrs. Bei was placed in a psychiatric hospital in Hangzhou City.

"I went to the hospital to visit her," says Mr. Xu, recalling a trip to Hangzhou City in June. "I could not believe what I saw. The 'ward' should really be called a jail cell. There was only a 'bed' made of pieces of wood and covered with straw. There ware not even the basic necessities for living and sanitation."

'I had the ominous feeling that it might be the last time I saw my Mom.'

Chris Xu

Mr. Xu says his mother was injected with large doses of sedatives and that her health was deteriorating because of the poor conditions in the hospital. "When I left the hospital, I had the ominous feeling that it might be the last time I saw my Mom."

On Sept. 10, Mrs. Bei died at the hospital. Her son says she was "starved to death by the police. They did not allow her any food for a whole week."

Countries around the world, including Canada, have criticized Beijing for human rights violations which Falun Gong officials say have led to more than 70 deaths, the illegal detention of 25,000 people in labor camps and the incarceration of more than 1000 others in prisons or mental hospitals around the country. Estimates of the number of Falun Gong practitioners in China run as high as 100 million.

Two more practitioners were reported yesterday to have died in police custody, bringing to at least 74 the death toll in the 17 month crackdown, according to a Hong Kong -- based human rights group.

Wan Huachen, a 32 year-old chemical factory worker, died Nov. 18 in a hospital from injuries he got jumping out of a fourth-story window at a police station in the northeastern city of Huludao, the Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said.

Zhao Jing, 19, was arrested Nov. 23 on a train in the northern province of Hebei while travelling to Beijing with other Falun Gong followers, the center said. Three days later, police notified her family she was dead. Police said she died after falling in an escape attempt, but her companions said they heard her cries as police beat her.

With files from the Associated Press

'My Mom was starved to death'

Refugee claimant Chris Xu, an MBA student in Newfoundland, says his mother Shi Bei is one of scores of Falun Gong practitioners in China who have paid with their life for defying Beijing's ban on the meditation exercise.

On Sept. 10, my Mom was killed in the Seventh Hospital of Hangzhou City (a psychiatric hospital), only because she was a Falun Gong practitioner.

I had just arrived in Canada when I learned of this tragedy. I was overwhelmed by great sorrow.

My Mom's name was Shi Bei. She was born in Lanxi of Zhejiang Province in 1951. My father's name is Xu Xianghu, and he was born in Xuzhou of Jiangsu Province in 1949.

My mother was a worker in Fuyang City of Zhejiang Province. Before she practiced Falun Gong, she suffered from a serious protrusion of the lumbar as well as from heart disease.

Every winter, she had to go to the department of orthopedics of the First People's Hospital two or three times for massage therapy.

This long – term ill health often left her in depression. In Sept. 1995, she began to practice Falun Gong, and her physical and mental condition started improving.

In the past, she often needed the support of the wall while walking, but after practicing Falun Gong, she could do housework all by herself, and she could help carry the gas tank together with me from the ground floor up to our home.

Under her influence, my father and I also took up the cultivation practice.

In August 1996, mom became the contact person of the practice site of Falun Gong in Fuyang city. She took it was her responsibility to introduce Falun Gong to people in Fuyang as well as the villages and towns nearby.

On six separate occasions, she used her own money to rent auditoriums and classrooms for holding introductory sessions on Falun Gong. Her efforts made more and more people able to learn and study Falun Gong.

In March 1998, one practitioner confessed to Mom that he was really a secret agent from the State Security Bureau, and he was responsible for collecting information on the local Falun Gong 'organization.' His experience of interacting with fellow practitioners over the preceding few months had convinced him that Falun Gong would not inflict any harm to the state or society.

Instead, it is a good practice that can make people healthy, enhance their wisdom, and upgrade the moral standards of society in general.

In mid-May of 1998m several plainclothes policemen took Mom away from our home and did not release her until midnight.

I asked Mom afterwards why they did that. Mom said the police demanded that she submit a list of all the local Falun Gong practitioners.

In July 1999, President Jiang Zemin and his followers in the Chinese government denounced Falun Gong as an "illegal organization." After that, Mom and Dad were forced to report to local police station about their "thoughts" every month.

They took this as a good opportunity to let the policemen gain a better understanding of Falun Gong. After a period of time, even the policemen said to Mom: "Why don't you just say something bad about Falun Gong against your conscience, so that we can report to our supervisors?"

But Mom had been determined about her faith, and never agreed to recant.

In May 2000, the police department of Fuyang City forcefully "committed" Mom to the Seventh Hospital of Hangzhou City. This hospital is a psychiatric hospital for mental patients, although there was nothing wrong with her.

In mid-June, I went to the hospital to visit her. I could not believe what I saw. The "ward" should really be called a jail cell. There was only a "bed" made of pieces of wood and covered with straw. There were not even basic necessities for living and sanitation.

But Mom was still very optimistic and talkative, introducing Falun Gong to people she met.

The staff members of the hospital, under the pressure of the police, gave Mom forced injections of sedatives using a large syringe.

When I left the hospital, I had the ominous feeling that it might be the last time I saw my Mom.

My Dad was also detained. I dared not go home. I could only live at the office of my school. I had hoped that my parents would be released, but my Dad was later sent to Laodongyue Jail.

In the end, the police starved my Mom to death. They did not allow her any food for a whole week, in order to prevent her from speaking on behalf of her faith.

I have lost my Mom. I don't know the condition of my Dad who is currently detained in Laodongyue Jail of Hangzhou City. This family tragedy made it very difficult for me to continue my studies in Canada.

But I cannot go back to China. Otherwise, my entire family might perish under this ongoing persecution.

I will learn from Mom to be determined in my faith.

No matter where I am, I will uphold my belief in Falun Gong.

2)      "Two More Falun Gong Members Reported Dead in Chinese Police Detention", AFP, Dec. 7, 2000

BEIJING, Dec 7, 2000 -- (Agence France Presse)

Two more followers of the Falun Gong spiritual movement have died after maltreatment in Chinese police detention, a human rights group said Thursday. The deaths bring to at least 74 the number of group members who are reported to have died in suspicious circumstances while in police custody since Falun Gong was banned in July last year, according to the Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy.

Wang Huachen, 32, a worker at the Jinhua Group in the city of Huludao in the northeastern province of Liaoning, jumped from a fourth story window at a public security office on November 18 and later died in a hospital, the center said. Wang had been repeatedly beaten since being arrested on November 7 for his beliefs in the spiritual group in an effort to make him sign a written recantation of his belief in the spiritual group, the center said. An official at the Jinhua Group confirmed to AFP that Wang had died, but was unaware of the circumstances of his death.

In another incident, Zhao Jing, 19, from Jilin in the northeastern province of Jilin, died after jumping from a police car in Hebei province, the center said. She had been arrested along with several other Falun Gong members while traveling to Beijing. Travelling companions told the center that Zhao only appeared to be slightly injured after she jumped from the car, but after the group was taken to a local police station in Hebei, the group heard Zhao's screams and police beating her in an adjoining room.

Zhao's arrest and attempted escape occurred on November 23, while police told her family on November 26 that she died from serious injuries while jumping from the police car, the center said. Relatives who saw her body said Zhao appeared to have been beaten, while police cremated the corpse before Zhao's father could view his daughter for the last time, the center said. A spokesman with the Public Security Bureau of Jilin city denied to AFP that the case of Zhao Jing existed.

China's communist government sees the Falun Gong as the biggest threat to its one-party rule since the 1989 Tiananmen democracy protests and banned the movement in July 1999. Members of the spiritual group follow the Buddhist-inspired teachings of their exiled guru Li Hongzhi, who advocates clean living and group morning exercises that involve traditional Chinese breathing routines.

Some 450 members have received prison sentences of up to 18 years, more than 600 have been sent to mental hospitals, 10,000 have been placed in labor camps and another 20,000 locked up in temporary detention centers, according to the rights center.

2)      Three more Falungong followers die in police custody”, AFP, April 20, 2000

Thursday, April 20, 2000, 6:25 PM SGT

BEIJING, April 20 (AFP) - Three members of the outlawed Falungong spiritual group have died in police custody in the past month, bringing the number of such deaths to at least 15, a Hong Kong rights group said Thursday.

The Information Center on Human Rights and Democracy said Li Yanhua, 46, Guang Zhaosheng and Zhang Zhenggang, were jailed for refusing to renounce their belief in the group and died in police custody during the last month.

Only the deaths of Li, in Nanchang, southern Jiangxi province, and Guan from Guangjiazui, Hunan province could be independently confirmed.

Li's husband, who identified himself as Yang, told AFP that his wife was sentenced without trial to two years reform through education in January and died on April 14 of heart failure after participating in an 11-day hunger strike.

The family requested medical parole in February, but was refused, Yang said. He said that the hunger strike continued after his wife's death.

A governmental office in charge of quelling the Falungong group in Hunan province confirmed to AFP that Guan Zhaosheng died while he was in detention in Beijing this month, but said his death was due to his refusal to take medicine.

The information center said it was told by other detained Falungong followers that Guan was beaten to death by Beijing police and his family was compensated 10,000 yuan (1,200 US dollars) for his death. The government office spokesman denied paying any compensation.

In the third death, the center said Zhang Zhenggang fell into a coma after he was beaten by police in Huaian, Jiangsu province and was hospitalized for five-days before 60 police surrounded the hospital and cremated Zhang before he was officially pronounced dead.

Since July at least 15 Falungong practitioners have died in police custody, including Zhao Jinhua, 42, who was allegedly beaten to death by police in Zhangxing, Shandong province and quickly cremated to destroy the evidence.

The Falungong group was banned last July, after the Chinese government labeled the group the biggest threat to one-party communist rule since the 1989 military crackdown on the peaceful Tiananmen democracy protests.

The group, which has also been labeled an "evil cult," advocates clean living and traditional Chinese meditation and breathing exercises.

However, the guards "stretched" him for four days and nights. Then, Mr. Qiu was sent to a hospital. His relatives later helped to obtain his discharge.
