Print  E-mail

Mr. Tong Wencheng, male, 49, resident of Shuangcheng City, Heilongjiang Province.

On October 27, 2000, the police at Tiananmen Square in Beijing noticed that Mr. Tong was practicing Falun Gong there, so they arrested him. He was escorted back to his hometown, and detained in the First Detention Center in Shuangcheng City for over two months. There he was shackled and tortured so severely that, on at least three occasions, he lost consciousness.

Mr. Tong was then transferred to the Pingfang Detention Center in Harbin City, where police and criminal inmates, under orders, tortured him for 22 days.

On January 22, 2001, Mr. Tong was sentenced to two years of forced labor in the Changlinzi Labor Camp in Harbin City. The camp officers were often not allow him to sleep. Sometimes, Mr. Tong was forced to stand facing a wall from early one day until 2 a.m. the next day, during which time, he was not given any water, and not allowed to use the restroom. Mr. Tong went on a hunger strike to protest this torture. As a result, he was force-fed. Due to conditions in the labor camp, he developed scabies all over his body. He was later also diagnosed with an "adhesive pleural membrane" and sent to the hospital in the Wanjia Labor Camp. In this "hospital", he did not receive medical treatment. Instead the police forced him to squat on the floor while they cold poured water over him in the middle of winter. His detention term was extended 18 days beyond its original expiration date. On return home, his condition worsened, and he died on June 14, 2003.
