Before the persecution of Falun Gong started, only one hundred to two hundred people were imprisoned at the Beijing Women's Labor Camp. After the suppression of Falun Gong began, the number of detainees increased rapidly from about one hundred in July 2000 to over thousands in April 2001. The authorities use various methods to torture practitioners. Also they force practitioners to work extended hours in a toxic environment. Practitioners usually have to work until midnight. After work, practitioners are often deprived of sleep, brainwashed and tortured.

Torture Methods:

Shocking with Electric Batons

In February 2001, Li Jing, Cheng Cuie, Jiao Xuexian, and another guard shocked Mr. Zheng Libin (above) with electric batons. Mr. Zheng is resident of Jiamusi City, Heilongjiang Province.

Riding the Airplane

This posture requires that one's head points downward, the back of the neck is against the wall, and the arms are raised with the hands touching the wall. Most people feel that their head will explode and cannot tolerate it for even ten minutes. However, Falun Gong practitioners are forced to "ride an airplane" for at least an hour. In Beijing Women's Labor Camp, one practitioner was forced to stay like this for a whole night simply because she would not renounce Falun Gong.

Squatting without Moving

Practitioners are forced to squat in the sun for several hours with their body weight resting on one leg while their upper body is kept straight and their hands are placed on their knees. They are forced to squat like this for several days, some for more than 40 days without a break.

A Special Case of Ms. Chen Shulan:

Three members of Chen's family were tortured to death. Mr.Chen's two twin brothers Mr.Chen Aizhong陈爱忠 and Mr.Chen Aili陈爱立; and her younger sister Ms. Chen Hongping 陈洪平were all tortured to death because their belief in Falun Gong. Their cases were reported to United Nations.

1. Ms. Yang Feng 杨峰, female, born in 1963, is a resident of #113 Door #1, A1 Building, North Shuangyushu Road, Haidian District, Beijing. She is a businesswoman. On March 1, 2005, she was arrested and detained in the Beijing Women's Labor Camp where she was tortured.

2. Ms. Liu Guifu 刘桂芙, female, 50, resident of the Haidian District in Beijing, was arrested on February 28, 2005, and sentenced two and half years of forced labor. It was her fifth time in detention. She is detained in the Beijing Women's Labor Camp. Under orders from the No. 2 Team Leader, Son Lili, Ms. Liu was deprived of sleep, forced to sit or stand in one position for 18 days and nights, forced to take unknown drugs, beaten and subjected to mental torture. As a result, her weight has dropped from 155 lbs to 100 lbs, her hair has turned gray and she moves slowly, as if she has aged over twenty years since her arrest.The authorities threatened her husband Mr. Liu Baoguo, to get him to divorce her. Her sister Liu Guijin, resident of Tangshan City, was tortured until she was disabled.

3. Ms. Liu Xiangfen 刘祥芬, female, 42, was living on Shangde Street in Beijing. On March 1, 2005, she was arrested and sentenced to two and half years of forced labor. She is the mother of 3 children, the youngest of whom is less than two years old. She is detained in the Beijing Women's Labor Camp. This is the second time she was detained there.
   
4. Ms. Zhang Huirong 章惠蓉, female, in her 30s, was a teacher in the Beijing Industry University. In June 2001, she was arrested and sentenced to one and half years of forced labor. She was tortured in the Beijing Women's Labor Camp until she developed a mental disorder. Then she was sent to the Forth Division of the labor camp, where division leader Li Jirong and others tortured her.
   
5. Ms. Lang Dongyue 郎東月, female, in her 40s, is a farmer from Yanqing County in Beijing. When her term ended, the authorities arbitrarily extended it. She is detained in the Intensive Torture Group in the Beijing Women's Labor Camp, where she is locked in a confined cell, forced to stand for an extended time, deprived of sleep, and not allowed to use the restroom. Two inmates have been ordered to monitor and torture her. Guard Huo Xiuyun slapped her on her face and beat her.
   
6. Ms. Zhang Yijie 张亦洁, female, in her 50s, was a deputy director general in the Ministry of Foreign Trade. She has been detained in the Beijing Women's Labor Camp since 2000. Under the orders of division leaders Jiao Xuexian and Kui Chunhong, Ms Zhang has been deprived of sleep, beaten, and shocked with electric batons. She was not allowed to eat, drink or go to the toilet for days, and she is not allowed to meet with anybody except those who constantly monitored her. She already looks heavy-hearted with blank eyes and her speech is halting. Her back is seriously hunched and she walks with her body stooped. From the distance, she looks like a frail old woman. Two months before she should have been released, her release date was postponed and she was taken to another area to be persecuted more severely.
   
7. Ms. Qi Bingshu 齐秉淑, female, in her 60s, resident of Beijing, is the granddaughter of the famous painter Qi Baishi. Her health is in critical condition because of the torture.
   
8. Ms. Zhang Guiling 张桂玲, female, in her 40s, is a resident of the Chaoyang District in Beijing.
   
9. Ms. Chen Fengxian 陈凤仙, female, about 53, a Russian Translator, is a resident of Beijig.
   
10. Ms. Li Xiaofeng 李晓凤, female, a resident of Beijing, was sent to the Intensive Torture Group
    
11. Ms. Du Rongfen 杜荣芬, about 40, a resident of Jin County in Hebei Province. She was locked in a small cell for an extended time.
    
12. Ms. Han Yingli 韩英立, female, from Qinghua University in Beijing, was arrested and sentenced to four years of forced labor.
    
13. Ms. Yu Hewen 於贺文, female, resident of the Xicheng District in Beijing, was sentenced to forced labor in 2003. In August 2003, she went on a hungry strike to protest the torture. She was then detained in the Intensive Torture Group for further persecution. Her health is in critical condition. She has been sent back and forth between the hospital and the labor camp.
    
14. Ms. Zhang Shurong 张淑荣, female, is a resident of Fangshan County in Beijing. Leader Du Wei tortured her. After being shocked with electric batons, her face and lips turned black. She has become mentally disordered and is unable to take care of herself.
    
15. Ms. Qi Yingchun 祁迎春, female, was an employee of the China People’s University. In 2003 she was arrested and sentenced to two years of forced labor.
    
16. Ms. Yuan Lin 袁琳, female, about 50, was a teacher at Beijing University in Beijing. She was sentenced to eight years of forced labor.
    
17. Ms. Gong Ruiping 宮瑞平, female, 38, was a teacher in Pinggu County, Beijing City.

1. Ms. Wang Yue 王粵, female, about 50, resident of Beijing, graduated from Beijing University in the mid 1980's with a degree in Philosophy, and worked as an editor at the People's Press. In 2001, she was detained in the Beijing Women’s Labor Camp, where she was deprived of sleep and tortured in the brainwashing center. As a result, her cervical vertebra was dislocated. Her spinal cord and dural sac were unduly stressed. She also suffered brain damage. Her reaction time has slowed down considerably, and her hearing, memory and reasoning ability have weakened. Sometimes she's absent minded, her train of thought is disconnected, she has difficulty writing and communicating, and she involuntarily trembles. She has difficulty taking care of herself and cannot work.
   
2. Ms. Guo Xuelian 郭雪莲was born in 1982 in Guojiashangtong Village, Zhanglin Township, Changyi City, Weifang, Shandong Province. In 2000, when she was 18 years old, she was detained in the Beijing Women's Labor Camp, and tortured to mental collapse.
