Mr. Liu Fengchun, born on March 16, 1974, is a No. 1 Ranked teacher at the Changyi District Lianhua Elementary School in Jilin City, Jilin Province. Because of his excellent teaching, he was awarded as "Top-Ten Star Teacher" of the Jilin City Art Education Research Experiment School and as " Outstanding District Teacher." He was also promoted to be a Teaching Director.

After the persecution started on July 20, 1999, the school authorities frequently attempted to coerce him into renouncing his belief in Falun Gong. Before October 1, 2004, the higher authorities of the Changyi District set forth some requirements explicitly stating that teachers would not be permitted to practice Falun Gong. In the meantime, they requested that the principals and the secretaries of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) of all middle and elementary schools order all of their employees to write "guarantee statements"[1] based on the version the authorities already drafted. The principal of the Lianhua Elementary School, Mou Zongliang, tried to force Mr. Liu to write the statement but Mr. Liu refused. Mou and another principal also went to Mr. Liu's residence to urge him to give up his belief in Falun Gong. At the same time, the school authorities talked to his family members, relatives, and friends asking them to pressure him to give up his practice. Yet, Mr. Liu continued to uphold his beliefs and again refused to write the “guarantee statement.”

At the end of 2004, because of his practice of Falun Gong, the Changyi District Bureau of Education cancelled Mr. Liu's "Famous Teacher" qualification. At the beginning of the school year of 2005, they went to talk with him once more trying to coerce him into giving up his Falun Gong practice. Nevertheless, Mr. Liu was still firm.

On May 10, 2005, four administrators from the school went to talk with Mr. Liu. They emphasized that Mr. Liu had not conducted himself according to the CCP's request. They told him that if he persisted in practicing Falun Gong, he would either have to resign or spend his workday cleaning the entire school every day. Then at the end of the year, he would be “re-evaluated.” If he failed to meet the expectation again, he would automatically be forced to resign. Mr. Liu replied that he had done nothing wrong; yet the school authorities had ordered a well-educated and qualified person to do menial labor.

In the morning on June 13, 2005, Mr. Liu went to see Li Guangyin, section leader in the Changyi District Bureau of Education, to question him about the unreasonable work arrangement. Li Guangyin told him, "If you promise not to practice Falun Gong in writing, you will have your job back. Otherwise, you will continue to work as a janitor." Mr. Liu answered, "I will never give up practicing Falun Gong. You must reinstate me as a schoolteacher."

Because of all the pressure from the school authorities, Mr. Liu was eventually forced to leave the school. The students have lost a well-loved and superior teacher simply because of his belief in Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance.
