Eleven Tortured to Death in Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province

 

Since July 1999, at least eleven Falun Gong practitioners of Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province have been tortured to death because of their belief. Most of them were women in their 40s and 50's. The Zhangjiakou City Police Bureau and the local 610 Office are responsible for their deaths. The confirmed death cases are listed below:

 

1. Ms. Sun Yanqing, female, in her 40s, was a resident of Hebei Province. She worked at the Mechanical Maintenance Facility of the Xuanhua District Steel Works in Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. In 2000, Ms. Sun was arrested by police in Beijing when she went there to appeal for an end to the persecution of Falun Gong. Her condition became critical after she was tortured through force-feeding during a weeklong hunger strike. Ms. Sun was sent back from Beijing to Zhangjiakou City, was hospitalized, and died a few days afterwards.  She left behind a young son.

 

2. Ms. Yang Yufang, female, 47, resident of Dongyaozi Village, Qiaoxi District, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. Ms. Yang was a Falun Gong practitioner. On May 17, 2003, she was arrested by the police from a house in the vicinity of the Ningyuanbao area, Qiaodong District, Zhangjiakou City. In less than a month, on June 16, 2003, she was tortured to death at the Shisanli Detention Center in Zhangjiakou City.

 

3. Ms. Chen Hongping,  female, 32, resident of Huailai County, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. In 2001, she and her sister Chen Shulan, both Falun Gong practitioners, were arrested and beaten by the Donghuayuan police at the Donghuayuan bus station in Huailai County. Ms. Chen Hongpings legs were broken and she vomited blood. Ms. Chen was taken to the Gaoyang Labor Camp and was subjected to further torture, as well as round-the-clock brainwashing against her belief in Falun Gong. After more than a year and a half of ongoing torture, Ms. Chen was in critical condition. She died right after the authorities sent her back home on March 5, 2003.

 

4. Ms. Song Cuiling, female, 52, resident of Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. On May 5, 2002, the police arrested her at Tiananmen Square, where she had gone to appeal for and end to the persecution of Falun Gong. Ms. Song underwent the same inhuman torture as other practitioners at the Zhangjiakou Detention Center. She went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution and was tortured to death on May 20, 2002.

 

5. Ms. Jiang Shuhua, female, 50, a Falun Gong practitioner and resident of Shihuiyao Village, Yangtian Township, Chicheng County, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. Ms. Jiang was arrested by police on February 8, 2002. Ms. Jiang was tortured to death at 1:00 a.m. on March 3, 2002 while in police custody, after less than a month of detention.

 

6. Ms. Sun Yumei, female, 55, resident of Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. She had been arrested several times by the police and suffered detention, forced labor education and torture because she practiced Falun Gong. Ms. Sun was forced to leave her home in order to avoid persecution and arrests. Due to her weakening physical condition caused by the persecution, Ms. Sun died while away from her home in Yutian, Hebei Province.

 

7. Ms. Zhang Zhigen, female, 53, a Falun Gong practitioner and resident of Zhangjiakou City. She worked in the Zhangjiakou Embroidery Factory. She went to Beijing to appeal for an end to the persecution of Falun Gong on October 24th, 1999 and was arrested while doing the sitting meditation on Tiananmen Square. In April 2000, she again went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. The Zhangjiakou "610 Office" deputies detained her at the Xuanhua District Detention Center of Zhangjiakou City for seventeen days. There she suffered severe torture. One of her legs became infected due to detention center neglect, and had to be amputated. On October 6, 2000 she went, on crutches, to Beijing and was arrested again. She was escorted to the Shisanli Zhangjiakou City detention center and tortured for nine days. The detention warden confiscated her crutches, and her other leg became infected as well. Later, she was released to her family, but her condition continued to worsen. On February 25, 2001, Ms. Zhang died as a result of the torture.

 

8. Ms. Wang Ailing, female, 51, a worker at the Zhangjiakou Printing Factory in Hebei Province. Ms. Wang went to Beijing numerous times to appeal for an end to the persecution of Falun Gong, and had been detained six times. In December 2000, she was sent to the Xuanhua Detention Center. Ms. Wang was released only after she was in critical condition caused by severe torture. After she was sent back home she could not recover from the injuries. She died on May 15, 2001.

 

9. Ms. Zhu Yourong, female, in her 40's, was a Falun Gong practitioner and resident of Xuanhua District, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. She was brutally tortured while being detained at the Women's Second Brigade in the First Forced Labor Camp of Hebei Province. She died on December 16, 2000 at the labor camp.

 

10. Ms. Fan Yaxiong, female, 42, a resident of Zhangjiakou City. She was the Chairwoman for Teaching and Guidance at High School No. 15 in Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. Ms. Fan was arrested when she went to Beijing to appeal for an end to the persecution of Falun Gong in May 2000. The Zhangjiakou "610" officials sent her to the Shalingzi Mental Hospital, where she was forcibly injected with nerve damaging drugs. In June 2000, Ms. Fan was sentenced to three years of forced labor education. She was brutally tortured at the Tangshan Forced Labor Camp. The labor camp released her only after she was in critical condition, in late 2000. She died the day after she was brought home.

 

11. Mr. Chen Aizhong, male, 33, a resident of Beixinbao Town, Huailai County, Zhangjiakou City in Hebei Province. Since July 20, 1999 Mr. Chen, together with his family, had gone to Beijing to appeal for an end to the persecution of Falun Gong. On September 12, 2000, he was sent to the Sixth Brigade of Hehuakeng Labor Camp in Tangshan City. He went on a hunger strike after suffering brutal torture. Mr. Chen died from force-feeding on September 20, 2000, after only eight days in the labor camp.
