To deceive the world, the Chinese government has been fabricating stories of lives lost and families broken up resulting from family member who practice Falun Gong. Nothing could be further from the truth. The official record of the 53rd session of the United Nations Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights noted a statement by the International Education Development, an NGO, to the UN: “In our investigation, the only deaths have been at the hands of the Chinese authorities; families have been broken up because family members have been killed by the regime; people have been bro-ken down, not by Falun Gong, but by extreme torture, incarceration in mental hospitals with brutal treatment, hard labor in labor camps and other such practices.”
With more than 70 million practitioners in China, the persecution of Falun Gong by the Chinese government is undisputedly the greatest human rights violation in human history. Millions upon millions of families have been broken up by government forced divorce or by the loss of family members to death in police custody, long jail terms, or open-ended detention in labor camps. The Chinese government also torments family members in order to pressure Falun Gong practitioners to renounce Falun Gong: brothers and sisters are fired from their jobs, elders are stripped of retirement benefits, and children are expelled from school. The authorities then accuse the Falun Gong practitioners for bringing these disasters upon their families.
Encouraged by all levels of government, the police forces have treated their persecution of Falun Gong practitioners and their families as an opportunity to extort money. Some policemen openly force the victims’ families to choose between a steep ransom and the lives of their loved ones. Some policemen are known to have demanded sexual services in exchange for lives. Many Falun Gong practitioners were beaten to death simply because the policemen’s greedy desires were not fulfilled.
With the prolonged persecution, with more and more people tortured to death, and with the complete legal impunity granted by the government to the extortionists, torturers and murderers, more and more people are forced to become Internally Displaced Persons (a UN technical term to describe people being forced from their homes by various factors). In order to escape the certain torture and likely death, to give their families the excuse of “We don’t know where they are,” or simply because there is nothing left for them under the sky, numerous practitioners have fled their homes to become “IDP.”
Again, due to space limitations, we are only able to present to you some of these tragic stories.
